My research interest is variability, change and interaction of the atmosphere and the ocean, and their interactions from the perspective of climate science, at the Ocean Climate Physics Laboratory, Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University.

Research

The main research themes conducted so far are as follows:

Late 1990s - Early 2000s	Decadal-scale variability in the atmosphere and ocean
Late 2000s - Present	Atmosphere-ocean interaction in the mid-latitudes. The first study in this series, Minobe et al. (2008), was featured on the cover of Nature.
Late 1990s - Early 2000s	Decadal-scale variability in the atmosphere and ocean
2010s	Sea level rise
Late 2010s - Present	Marine biogeochemistry and marine ecosystem variability
2020s	Climate prediction

The research methods primarily involve the analysis of existing data. Currently, the goal is to combine the explosively increasing data generated by computers with the much scarcer and valuable observational data to pioneer a new, rich world that surpasses the limits of both computation and observation.

Data Created and Published in Research

• Diurnal variation of precipitation based on TRMM3G68 composite data of TRMM satellite precipitation radar and microwave imager for the global tropics (35S-35N). The annual average diurnal cycle was published in Minobe et al. 2020 J. Climate. Seasonal and monthly diurnal cycles, which are barely mentioned in the paper, are also published.
